Don is the perfect example of a classic golfer. A true gentleman, honest, fair, and always doing his best and looking good while he's doing it. His example is a worthy goal.

Don and I first met in early 1966 when Don was considering the position of Head Golf Professional at the under construction Glastonbury Hills Country Club. That day began a wonderful working relationship between Golf Professional and Golf Course Superintendent that would last 25 years. The relationship grew as we worked together to launch a new golf facility that has become a great asset to the town of Glastonbury. Don always ran a Golf Shop Operation and Teaching Program second to none that I have witnessed in my many years in the golf business. Don was the "goodwill ambassador" to the many members and guests that would frequent the "Hills" as the operation matured. I treasured the working relationship we had that is so rare in the golf industry today.
Goodby Pro!
Thanks for 25 great years!
Job Well Done!

I remember when I was in elementary school, I always played at the Ross' house with Sarah, and I couldn't wait! I always thought they were rich as Mr. Ross would hand us a bucket of quarters to play the pinball machine! When we ran out, I would ask him for more, only to find him buried in golf balls on the couch! He said I had to help him in order to get more quarters. I got my first lesson in why we had to stripe all the golf balls!

As one of my first summer jobs, I had the privilege of working for Don Ross, Golf Pro at the Glastonbury Hills Country Club. Technically, I was the assistant to the assistant golf professional—which really means I scrubbed clubs, cleaned and parked carts and picked up range balls.
It was a great job except for the early start time. I didn't have a car, so Don would stop by my house in his spotless pick-up truck to give me a lift to work. He would arrive at the crack of dawn and invariably, I'd be late. I'd climb in half awake with wet hair and Don would chuckle and make some remark about pillow-marks on my cheek.
Don loved "the truck," as he referred to it. And the only time I ever actually saw him use the flatbed, was the day he dropped off a moped at my house. Now you're responsible for getting yourself to work, he said. I'd like to think it was a reward for my work performance, but he probably just grew tired of waiting for me in the morning.
Don taught me to be responsible—from showing up to work on time, to cashing out the register at the Pro Shop and taking care of customers. He also taught me the game of golf. At the end of a long workday, we'd hop in a cart and play a few holes. Don was a very accomplished player—smart, steady and strategic—and he loved to share this knowledge with others. He had an uncanny ability to instruct and at the same time inspire.
He loved the game of golf, but Don may have enjoyed a good golf story even more. With his wry sense of humor, Don was a great storyteller too. We'll certainly miss Don's stories, lessons and humor, but we'll never forget the positive influence he has had. God bless…
