I am very sorry to have learned about your loss. I knew Betty when I was just 13 years old, as she was our cheerleading coach for 4 years at St. Paul's Junior High in Kensington. She was much more to us than our coach.. she was our mentor and our friend. We have some really fond, and funny, memories with her! I am sorry that I had not connected with her in many many years but I thought of her very often. My sypmathies to you all.

My favorite memories of Betty come from our Cruise vacation in 2010 to the Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Key West. She and I met several times to work out details, with me agreeing to just relaxing, reading, chilling out and no off ship tours. Okay! We were on the ship about 10 min before Betty got a hold of the itinerary for ship activities and immediately checked off all the Trivia, Bingo, tours of the ship kitchen and nites with karaoke. Within hours, we were both signed up for the Cayman beach party, Jamaica rum tour and trolley tour of the Keys. We would get up early, eat breakfast, get our chairs to sun and read. We'd be there for maybe 10 min before Betty would say, Gotta go to trivia; you hold our chairs… Alright, then !
We'd be on a tour all day, get back just in time to change for eating at the early dinner session, go to the entertainment show, then she'd insist that I go to the karaoke show with her. About 11pm, exhausted, I excused myself and went to sleep. The next morning, I would awake about 6:30 to find Betty sitting up in bed, already awake and reading. I would be amazed and asked her if she got any sleep. Sleep? she said, you can sleep when you get back home! The week continued, jammed packed with fun. The day we were going home, we had several hours to wait, so she suggested we take a tour. We agreed to go on a tour of the Everglades on an airboat. We got back just in time to get to the airport and get checked in. I was so tired by that point, that I didn't think twice about Betty carrying a box with 4 bottles of rum along with her luggage through security. She had given me a really hard time all week about having such a big llbean bag, but when she was informed that her bottles exceeded the 3oz containers they allow for liquid (haha), she was more than happy to tell the security people to retrieve my bag from luggage and repack them into my llbean bag, LOL!!! What a fun trip - thanks, Betty !!!

Betty was my 8th grade math teacher during her first year at Webb. She was a kind and patient teacher. I was recently thinking of her as I went through Torre Annunziata Italy! Rest in Peace Betty and thank you for all the good you have done for your students over the years. Marty Sullivan

I was fortunate to see Mrs. Riley both as my teacher in high school, and also as my colleague while I worked at the school. As her student I would share the “joke of the day” in her class and she actually tolerated me! Kristen McGuire and I would talk all day in her class and she let us have it, but was so kind in how she did it, and redirected us back to what we were supposed to be doing. She was an engaging teacher, immensely effective at gaining attention, stimulating interest, and arousing curiosity. She was respected by her students more than any other, and always was at school events showing her support. She truly knew how to be someone we looked up to. When I came to the school as the School Resource Officer, I loved coming by her class to see her. It was awesome seeing my old teachers as my colleagues, but Mrs. Riley was something different. I continued to look up to her and hang on her teaching as I sat in the classes. She even allowed me to have a few moments to teach in her class. My favorite moment was at prom, where I asked her to dance with me during a slow song. Initially it was to throw a curve ball to the students as that was always fun to do, and Mrs. Riley was more than willing to throw the curve, but it became a memory that I will never forget. She was so funny and the conversation didn’t end. Mrs. Riley was the educator that we all dream our children will be fortunate enough to have, and the person that we all aspire to be. She will be missed.

Betty and I began our teaching careers at Samuel B. Webb JHS in 1970. She and I quickly bonded and shared many great times. I am a Type A, and Betty brought such joy into my life and helped me to live in the moment. Our first winter of teaching, she tried to talk me into calling in sick so that we and her best friend Sue could go skiing. Betty had not yet had time to work her magic on me, so I dutifully went to school while she called in sick, went skiing, and broke her leg! She still managed to hobble on her crutches to colleague Wendy's second-floor apartment, where the 3 of us initiated our annual marathon baking of Christmas treats. She also inaugurated her annual project of having students construct miraculous mathematical shapes out of straws, decorating her classroom to the envy of her colleagues. Our days of being single were spent going to plays, concerts, and Florida; playing tennis; and practicing cooking together. I still make her recipe for Betty's Tangy Chicken! Betty's life was too short, but I think God packed extra joy, compassion, and generosity into this amazing individual to compensate for the brevity of time. Although we had not seen each other for 42 years, I know it would be as if no time had passed if we had been able to get together one last time. Betty will be missed by all who were blessed to have met her.

I was saddened last night when I received a call from my brother Bob telling me of Betty's passing. Immediately after I hung up the phone, joyous memories overtook my sadness. Betty and I began our teaching careers together at Samuel B. Webb JHS in 1970 and quickly became close friends. My memories are such happy ones--how could they not be when they involved the always impish, delightful "Miss A"! Our first year of teaching, Betty devised a plan in which we and her best friend Sue would call in sick and go skiing. Wouldn't you know that Betty would break her leg that day, so everyone knew she'd been skiing, not in her sick bed! Then there were all the years we got together in our colleague Wendy's kitchen to bake a multitude of holiday goodies. Betty, colleague Sarah, and I would frequently get together to play tennis and take turns making dinner. We saved our pennies and spent our first-year February break together in sunny Florida, having a ball. Betty won big at Hai Alai and promptly blew all her winnings treating Sue, Marilyn, and me to a fabulous dinner and evening out. Betty was in charge of the guest book at my wedding reception; she was the one person I knew who would make an instant friend of everybody there, so the book would be complete. Betty and I lost touch when my family moved to Michigan, but I feel saddened by her passing and gratitude for having known her. She was a wonderful, joy-filled, generous person who lived life to the fullest, and I know she will be missed by all who were blessed to have known her. Her family, friends, and loved ones are in my thoughts and prayers.

Betty was a warm wonderful person and from the minute I met her I felt that we had known each other a long time. We always had a good time whenever we were together and I'll miss her smile and her laugh. She was always helping/volunteering in some way or another. I can't imagine what it will be like to be in Maine without her this summer. My heart is broken to lose such a wonderful friend.

Betty has been a great friend to us through the years. She celebrated with us at our wedding and brought us homecooked meals when our children were born. We looked forward to game nights with her or just taking time to catch up. She truly was a wonderful friend who was taken from us too soon. We will miss her. Her family is in our thoughts and prayers.
