Walter and Lorraine were treasures in especially the South Glastonbury community, and to all of Glastonbury in general. Lorraine watched our two children when they were little on a regular basis, but we all knew Walter was right there at her side. I credit them with being partly responsible for the adults they have become. Life gets to busy and though we knew Walt was living without Lorraine we did not keep in touch. Shame on us, it was our loss but the kindness they showered on our family still is strong in our hearts. May they both Rest In Peace ❣️

My deepest sympathy to the family. I only knew Smitty the last few years at dinner with Nancy and Allan. We were all familiar with him saying "Jeepers" and loving his dessert. God rest your soul Smitty, and don't be thinking you're at the race track in heaven. Jen B

I truly enjoyed watching Smitty's success with his GMC 6 modified at Riverside Park Speedway. With Frank Moulton aboard, the six held its own against most of the 340 cu. in. V8s they raced against on Saturday nights... their Jimmy had great low end torque off the corners.
Smitty was a great guy and an even better wrench. Hope he's up there winning in the great speedway in the sky.

George and I met Lorraine and Walter in 1993 at square dance lessons at Buttonball School. What a joy they were and we just loved spending time with them. We had many memories of sitting on the glider on their deck drinking coffee and eating some fabulous baked good of Lorraine's. We went camping with them, our kids, along with Leah and Clayton. So many wonderful memories. Now the two of them, and my George, are together and laughing away. Walter was a kind, humble man and I can still hear his raspy voice and infectious laugh. Walter - give Lorraine and George a hug for me. I will always remember you. My condolences to Lee, Jill and the whole family.

We are fortunate to have known the Smiths who were one of our first neighbors when we moved in as a young couple. My sons grew up referring Lorraine as Rainey "Paati" (grandma in our language) & Walter "Thaatha " (grandpa) and remember Rainey's sugar cookies fondly. Walter was a great man, always tinkering around in his blue-uniformed pant & shirt, mowing his lawn, snow blowing, and climbing up to on the roof to clean the gutters. He put us young ones to shame with his energy and they don't make people like him anymore. Upon hearing that Walter Thaatha was one too, my younger son, a gearhead, aptly summed it by saying "if only I knew about his passion for cars". We will miss the Smiths and we send our condolences to the entire family

I have so many childhood memories of Smitty. We used to play this game where I would ring the doorbell and run away and he would chase me around the yard. I remember going to see his car race at riverside. He was such a warm, loving, charismatic person. A true genuine friend to my dad he would visit him frequently at my dad’s shop and later in life when dad got sick he was a consistent visitor and they would tell jokes, reminisce and laugh. After dad passed Smitty kept dad’s picture in his room and would salute it every morning. We now salute you Smitty. A true class act. May we all live by your example of true kindness and warmth understanding and tolerance in this otherwise crazy world. We will miss you. - Tracey, Ryan and Toni Smith
