R.T.Lee tribute to Miller Brown at Trinity College, 11.9.23:
Miller and I were personal friends and shared the usual things that keep friends together – but there was more. We were companions on a philosophical journey. For several years we wrote e-mails back and forth. We felt like Don Quixote and Sancho Panza on a quest to recapture a truth that had been hidden beneath mounds of fantasy and falsehood. We engaged with our dead ancestors and now and then with living colleagues.
Our topic was consciousness – what is it? What questions will yield fruitful answers? We talked and talked – like the Don and Sancho. We each played both parts as the occasion seemed right.
Philosophers need a companion. Philosophy is both driven and doomed by assumptions held but not recognized. It is very difficult to recognize one’s own. All of our beliefs present themselves to us as “things we think are true.” We need someone else to think something different for our own sake. Miller was a sympathetic archeologist of the mind – but not shy about finding pyrite where I thought I had gold.
We followed some roads to a dead end, and sometimes wandered in dark woods just as Quixote did. We saw strange things – some of them not seen by others. That is always a thrill – but a warning too. Are we right? Or just entranced by one of Quixote’s notorious magicians? We kept talking.
We had no destination – the trip was the point. Philosophers do not like destinations – such stopping places are suspiciously like persuasive beginning points: they betray some unacknowledged assumptions. A destination means there is no more need to travel – no more need to talk. We chose talk over a destination.
These travels will stay with me. My companion may not be here but he is part of my present. Perhaps part of your present too.

The cycle of life is too often taken for granted but becomes so apparent when a close loved-one transitions on, or a neighbor, like Miller, whose sights and sounds you get to know routinely, suddenly ceases to be. Life is a great mystery and I'm honored and happy to have shared the past 10 years of the mystery life with my neighbors, Miller and Hilary Brown. We affectionately called them the "Millerarlys"
Whether it be sharing passings in the driveway, dinners or neighborhood parties, Miller and Hillary were consummate lover's of life. Without ever prying, I guessed Miller to be a solid 10 years younger than his true age but was corrected when he called me up to say his goodbye in early July. What a gift to be conscious and intentional about moving on as Miller was. His presence, concern and intense thoughtfulness about all of life is a cherished gift to have experienced. Blessings to Hillary, Mara, Shana, Jasmine and Robin and all family members on your cherished memories of Miller and your loss! In Peace and Love -Scott

I met Miller just over a few years ago. Somehow he contacted me to do some painting and small carpentry work on the house and barn. We both enjoyed talking about the history of the house and I enjoyed working on "the Smith Sisters house" which he always reminded me that it was "the Brown house" in turn I would say to him that he needs to stop paying Gbury taxes on it first and start raising cows. I consider myself lucky to have met Miller and Hillary and their children.

Miller devoted himself to his family, to the discipline of philosophy, to Trinity College, to his beautiful, historic home in Glastonbury, to academic freedom (ACLU) and to running. He succeeded in all. All will miss him.

Cindy and I send our sincere and heartfelt condolences to the family of Miller Brown. I remember meeting him at Hamlin Hall many years ago and asking him if there was a running group that I could join at Trinity, and he indicated to me that there was a such a group that ran everyday at noon. Little did I know what a formidable group of runners they were at the time (Ralph Morelli, Ralph Walde, Richard Prigrodich, etc.), and that I would be peppered with all sorts of questions about the issues of the day and my academic interests while trying to catch my breath! I will always remember Miller as a friendly, thoughtful, and knowledgeable colleague who made a young faculty member feel right at home so many years ago! May your memory be a blessing. Miguel D. Carolyn and I were saddened to only just learn of Miller Brown's passing. We offer our condolences to all his family and friends.
As a student at Trinity and later as a Vice President there, knowing and working with Miller was a great experience. Despite his patient encouragement, his philosophy of history course was one of the few classes where I struggled to get it. But as a Trinity student, I also had the the great pleasure of working with him on several campus issues. His wise and caring counsel, as well as his humor, meant a lot to me during that time. Years later, when I returned to Trinity as a Vice President, Miller was named Dean of the Faculty (the hardest job on any campus). It was once again an honor and a pleasure to work with him as well as enjoy his friendship. The twinkling eyes, wisdom and good will behind his Barbarossa visage were a gift to all who knew him.

I admired Miller as a committed teacher (I took his Philosophy of Mind seminar, Wednesday evenings, 7-10 pm) and highly principled individual. Thirty-five years later we found ourselves working closely together during his deanship on academic affairs matters. Miller was especially dedicated to strengthening shared governance between the faculty, administration and board, which happened during his deanship. I feel so fortunate to have known Miller Brown.

I have been Miller’s neighbor for over 20 years. Miller had a great smile and a quiet demeanor and always greeted me with a hug. He was so intelligent and knowledgeable and enjoyed hearing him talk about his house history and the yard surroundings. I was glad I could offer my generator to him when he lost power during a storm so he could make coffee( ha ha). This maybe helped encouraged him to get a permanent generator. Being an ex- runner, I enjoyed watching him head out for a run/walk. Our paths did not cross that often but this great person will be missed.
My deepest sympathy to Hiliary and family.

Miller was one of three faculty coaches for Trinity's men's XC team in the second half of the 70s, mostly with Ralph Walde and supported by Mike Lestz. It was a different time, when Miller could host a cookout for the team at that fine family home at the beginning of the season, and serve beer to freshmen. The Yuengling was a revelation to a New England naïf, not least for one historically minded, as the oldest brewery in the US (little did we know that its billionaire owner would endorse a bad man for president 39 years later). During the ensuing disappointing season, Miller kept his head while all around him were losing theirs, and no doubt that steady and positive demeanor at least partly explained his later successes as cat wrangler and dean of the faculty. In 1984 or '85, one weeknight at the Comet Diner on Farmington Ave. where I was waiting tables, Miller appeared with Sam Kassow and another friend. "Alex," he said with a friendly sweep to his voice, "We always thought you'd be the first in your class to make a million dollars." Even if I never did approach that sum, it was highly complimentary and encouraging of him to say so, particularly when I was spinning my wheels in Hartford's gig economy. Requiescat in Pace, Miller:)

Professor Miller Brown was my academic advisor and ultimately my reason for majoring in Philosophy at Trinity. I still engage with many of my fellow Philosophy classmates and friends. I remember his kindness, contagious curiosity, and guidance to lead life independently, beautifully, humorously, and equipped with a rigorous critical mind. As a young person then, an immigrant, and still acclimating to New England life, private school, and growing a fuller identity - I felt that Professor Miller Brown was always someone that I could talk to then. I am so grateful that he was a part of my educational and personal journey. Condolences to all.

I met Miller first when I came to the Trinity Philosophy Department in the fall of 1967, and we have been friends ever since, although I still hold it against him that his donkey once kicked my dog. Miller and I shared a strong interest in the philosophy of sport, to which Miller made significant contributions that are still regularly referred to today. My deepest condolences to his wife and family.

Miller was my colleague in the Philosophy Department at Trinity College for over 30 years. He was a valued mentor and a dear friend. We had many rousing philosophical discussions/debates over the years and I learned a great deal from him. My sincere condolences go out to his family and his many friends.
