Obituary of James Kelly

James Kelly, 85, of Marlborough passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family on November 1, 2023 after a brief illness. He was born in Carmel, NY on May 19, 1938 to James L Kelly and Helen B (Foshay) Kelly. He graduated from Ellenville High School in 1956, and enrolled in New York University in 1961 where he obtained a Bachelor of Aeronautical Engineering. James was employed at Pratt Whitney before serving in the U.S Air Force where he graduated officer training. He served proudly in Operation Hard Surface, and the Cuban Conflict before an honorable discharge in 1967 as a First Lieutenant.  James met and married the love of his life Ruth (Merrithew) Kelly in 1966 and together they moved to Marlborough, CT. in 1968. He is survived in addition to his wife of 56 years, by his three sons Thomas Kelly and his wife Judy of Marlborough, CT, Robert Kelly and his wife Kimberly of Chelsea, AL, and Eric Kelly and his wife Emily of Marlborough, CT.  James is also survived by the light of his life his grandchildren Brendan, Sean, Brayden and Colleen as well as his sister Ruthanne Kelly. He was a devoted Grandpa and their biggest supporter. James was his happiest when he saw his grandchildren. His grandchildren could do no wrong, and were elite hockey players if you heard him tell it. His favorite Christmas gift every year was a sweatshirt bearing their names on it. He was extremely proud of all their accomplishments. James in life could not turn down a challenge. He was an Eagle Scout, a Skier, Pilot, Master Scuba Diver, Hamm Radio Operator, EMT, fire fighter, and world traveler. The family joked that he was into everything and has done everything. James will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The family would like to thank Dynamic Touch Home Care, and their aides, Rochelle, Charmaine, Brandon, Amanda, Natasha, and all the other aides that took wonderful care of him. The family would also like to sincerely thank the Marlborough Volunteer Fire Department for their care and support, especially Mark, Bob, and Ashley. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 11, 2023 at 11:00 am at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family. Friends may call on Friday, November 10, 2023 from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm at the funeral home.
