Obituary of John S. Macary, Jr.

John “Jack” Macary, Jr., 74, beloved husband and best friend of Melody Macary, died on July 14, 2024 with his wife by his side. Born in Waterbury, CT, to the late John and Henrietta Macary, he was the oldest of six children.

Jack attended Crosby High School and Mattatuck Community College, both in Waterbury, and graduated from Central CT State Univ. in New Britain with a B.S. degree in Business Administration. During his long career, he worked as an IT Systems Engineer at the top insurance companies in Hartford, including Aetna, CIGNA, Travelers, and The Hartford before retiring from The Hartford in 2019.

Jack and his wife loved to travel and vacationed around the world. Some of Jack’s best memories came from their cruises to exotic destinations, visits to some of the most exciting European cities, amazing adventures in South America and Asia, and sightseeing in the Middle East where they stood in awe of the pyramids and the Sphinx. There were also lots of wonderful trips around the U.S. and to Montreal, including dozens of fantastic vacations in Las Vegas.

Anyone who knew Jack knew how much he loved anything to do with cars, especially his little red Corvette…nothing made him happier than going for a ride with the top down. He also loved spending time relaxing on his deck, growing fresh veggies in his garden, apple-picking with his wife in the Fall, making soups at the holidays, sharing his couch (& bed) with his dogs Asti, Pepper, Toby, Kato and Beau, and getting together with his friends and family for any occasion.

His best friends Michael Ader and Steve Brown were such an important part of Jack’s life and going out to lunch with them was always the highlight of his week. Whether trying to solve the world’s problems or just sharing a laugh, their friendship and encouragement was always the best medicine.

Besides his wife of nearly 43 yrs., Jack is survived by his brothers and their wives: Richard Macary and wife Patti, Donald Macary and wife Susan, Douglas Macary, and sister-in-law Terry Macary. He also leaves his mother-in-law Audrey Davis of Vernon; sister-in-law Robin Kohler and husband Richard of Tolland; many cherished nieces, nephews, aunts and cousins; and lots of very dear friends, both near and far, that meant so much to him.

In addition to his parents, Jack was predeceased by his sister Margaret Macary, brother Martin Macary, sister-in-law Joan Macary and father-in-law Joseph Davis.

Relatives and friends are invited to call on Saturday, July 27, 2024 from 11:00 am-12:30 pm at Mulryan Funeral Home, 725 Hebron Ave., Glastonbury, CT. A funeral service will follow at 1:00 pm at Mulryan Funeral Home. A private burial will be at the convenience of the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Jack’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (www.stjude.org).
