Obituary of Doris Butcher
Doris Catherine (Britt) Butcher
Doris Butcher, loving mother and sister, died suddenly at Hebrew Home, West Hartford, on Tuesday, November 29. 2011. Doris was born on October 15, 1924 in Lexington, Massachusetts. She is survived by her daughter Lynne Butcher of South Glastonbury, Ct., her brothers Edward Britt (Medfield, MA) and James Britt (Maynard, MA) and many loving nieces, nephews and in-laws. Doris is predeceased by her parents, Sarah (Belson) Britt and Michael J. Britt, her husband Lynn, her brothers Robert and Joseph, and her sisters Mabel, Mary, Marjorie and Helen. In her teens Doris was a self- taught and accomplished figure skater and baton artist. In 1942 she married Sargent Lynn E. Butcher (of Lewis County West Virginia) and began a 20 year career as a proud and patriotic army wife. Her husband Lynn, a Purple Heart recipient, served in both World War II and the Korean War. Their life together brought them all over the United States and Europe. When Lynn retired from the military they moved to Bay Shore, New York. Doris and Lynn were married more than forty years. From her earliest days Doris had a love of history and antiques and after settling in Bay Shore she rarely missed a weekend without setting up her table at a flea market or running to a local tag sale. She had a great eye, a true sense of integrity, and sincere respect for those with whom she bargained. She loved most of all the human history inherent in the precious treasures she found. One of Doris' other life passions was animals. She rescued countless stray dogs and abandoned cats, never failing to do what she thought was right for them even when it placed a burden on her. Throughout her life she enjoyed the companionship of many beloved pets. I wish to thank the staff of Hebrew Home for their loving care of Doris- especially Joy, Theresa, Isis, Ruby and Nicole. There will be a private family memorial service in Lexington, Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to your local animal shelter or rescue organization.
