Our warmest thoughts are with you. While your journey continues, please know you are not alone. It is obvious by the tributes and overwhelming crowds which attended Dennis' viewings and funeral, he was loved and admired. His accomplishments were exemplary both personally and professionally. While I am sure Dennis was proud of his military career, I would guess he was most proud of you, his family.
Sincerely, Alan, Judy & Kelly

Dear Pat and family, I was saddened to hear of Dennis' passing. After so many years it was great to hear from him and catch up earlier this year. I was hoping all of us could have gotten together soon. At least he and I had some time via email last April. It had been a long time in between but I can assure you he was always with me as I remembered our days at Seton Hall, Allstate and the NJNG. I will miss him but his memory will always be with me. God bless. Jack Monahan

My heartfelt condolences to the entire Matthews family at this most difficult time, it is such a great loss for you to lose your husband, father, son, brother and brother-in-law and friend. I have worked with Dennis as long as he has been here at Webster Bank, in Cheshire CT. I can tell you what a great person he was and a phenomenal individual to work along side. I can never remember a time where he wasn’t smiling, saying hello to someone or just asking how you are doing today. I am sure your family is going to hear all kinds of stories over the next few weeks and months some maybe funny and some heartfelt, just know what a kind and wonderful man Dennis was to all of us and how much he meant to us. He knew things about you that you didn’t even know for example, my birthday was a few weeks back and Dennis sent me an email wishing me a Happy Birthday because he wasn’t able to be in Cheshire for the festivities, but the part that struck me the most was that he told me to enjoy my vacation to Alaska, ( I had never mentioned to him that I was going, he just knew every little detail about all of us right down to our name, that speaks volumes of how close he worked with us), he mentioned how you had a great time there a few years back and what a great and beautiful state it was. He was truly a hardworking, caring individual. I know that I am honored to have known and work with such a terrific man. Godspeed to you and your family “Hoorah” Julie S. Buckmiller

I'll never forget the first time I ever saw Sean and his Dad. Sean came into Appalachian Tails to seek a job with us...with his Dad. We hired him based mostly on that initial, quick meeting. They were both so polite, professional and friendly.
As it turns out...Sean has been with us ever since...and I have come to think of him as a family member. I've also had the privelage and pleasure to have spent time with him and his father, and always have thought the world of them. Fishing, shooting...and years of working with Sean.
The fact that Sean is such a quality young man is, I believe, a testament to just what a wonderful family he is from. I'll never forget the memories I have with Dennis...and I look forward to being a positive part of his son's life for years and years to come.
We love you Sean

One of my funniest memories of Uncle Dennis was when my sister and I were little kids. Uncle Dennis was always the one to buy us the things our parents deemed not safe or just crazy. Well Christmas morning came and with it Uncle Dennis and a big present. Me and Arlene gave the much enjoyed hugs and kisses and then tore into our present. Lo and behold it was a roller coaster. My parents were none to thrilled. It consisted of a car and a metal ramp which you pulled the car up onto and then pulled a lever and off you went into the unknown or as was our case, into anything in our living room. My mother tried to scold Dennis but well he just gave her that smile of his and that sly laugh and we got to play with that coaster all day in the house. I remember the smile on his face seeing us so happy. That coaster got banished to the basement but the memory of that fun filled Christmas with my dear Uncle will live in my heart forever. You were a truly great man and I will miss you more than words can say. There is a hole in my heart and a sadness in my soul. I take solace in knowing you are gaurding the gates of Heaven now and reunited with so many loved ones who have gone before you. Til I see you again, love you always.

Dear Matthews family, Pat, Kelly and Sean. I am so sorry for your loss. I have to say that Dennis was one of the nicest, kind, thoughtful, smart, hard working genuine man with a BIG HEART and a good sense of HUMOR. He was always full of life, liked to joke around and could make you laugh. He loved and talked about his family often with pride. I think he made an effort to acknowledge and communicate with everyone, which is rare for a man in his position. That is what made him well liked no matter what level you were on. He created a relaxed working environment which allowed everyone to perform their daily functions and accomplish their goals. He always tried to stress communication and respect of others dealing with the day to day operations. He talked about helping others, the volunteer work he was a part of, and the many years in service. I can honestly say that I enjoyed working with him and could not have asked for a better boss, friend and mentor. I have learned a lot from him both professionally and personally. I think everyone should have the experience and the pleasure of working for and knowing a man of his character in their lifetime. I am only sad to say that it was for a short time. A very PATRIOTIC MAN who will be GREATLY MISSED and THOUGHT OF FOREVER. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Aunt Pat, Kelly and Sean...Words cannot begin to express the sadness I feel. Uncle Dennis was such and amazing man and the BEST Uncle ever. I will miss him calling me Kimmie and making fun of my big feet. But most of all I will miss that smile and laugh. He could charm his way into anyones heart. He was taken way too soon and I know there will forever be a hole in our family where he belongs. He is watching over us all now and someday I will see him again. Until that day we will stay strong and keep him alive through all the incredible memories of the fun times we had. Love you all....

I first met Dennis years ago when he was between interviews for a new position he was vying for at Fleet Bank. We happened to meet and had coffee together in a break room while he was waiting for his next interview. While I was an external consultant and not part of the hiring process, I was so impressed that I called the EVP over all of Operations at that time and told him I’d just met one of the most outstanding individuals in my banking career and he’d better do all he could to get Dennis into his organization. Apparently, many others agreed because Dennis was quickly selected. Over the next several years, I had the pleasure of working with Dennis on several projects. While I met with him in person no more than ten or so hours in that period, we had extensive contact by phone and email. I was always impressed with the thorough manner in which he approached everything he did. While possessed of a strong personal presence, he relied more on his professional competence, calm leadership style and instant likability to get the most from everyone he dealt with. Dennis was a proud American and never stopped serving his country. Even after his retirement from the Reserves, he continued to share articles and updates with many of his friends that had an interest in our military. I can’t tell you how much I will miss Dennis, both as a personal friend and as one of the most remarkable people I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. America has lost one of her finest sons. My most heartfelt condolences go out to the Matthews family.

Hurricane Gloria 1985 - That was when I really came to know Dennis Mathews, the man, the person, my friend! As a neighbor and fellow employee of the same bank, he opened up his home to us, none of us had electricity, and trees all about, with so much work to do, but he said, come in, let’s eat, lets drink, the work can wait, and so we did! Since then, we have shared so much, it is a real challenge to communicate a tribute worthy of words, the feelings I have for him. I think there are so many of us that share similar thoughts. Not only a friend to me, Dennis was also, an advisor and a mentor to me, an example of the kind of person so rare to meet in America today. He paid his debt many times over to be an American citizen, an example to his children (Kelly and Sean), and to so many others. He went to Viet Nam, when so many others turned away, he gave of himself, for the betterment of us all. He always had a smile for everyone, always time to give, share whatever he had. Great Leaders are born and Dennis was a leader that so many would follow over the years that I knew him. I know his father and mother were so proud of everything he did for them, and for our country! I know Dennis was so proud of everything (I mean everything) that Kelly and Sean have done. And I am fully aware of everything the Matthews family has done to give back to the community they lived in. I will miss the emails, the phone conversations the updates on Pat, Kelly and Sean, and the visits that I knew would have happened after we both retired from our respective banking careers. One thing I will never miss or forget, are the memories that he gave to me. America was very blessed that Dennis passed by, and yes, America has been harmed that he is now gone ahead of his time. He had so much more to give! Pat, Kelly and Sean...you are in our prayers. May God bless you!
