Obituary of Anita Strassel Tiemann

Anita Strassel Tiemann, 89, of Peabody Massachusetts and formerly of North Fayston VT, Glastonbury, and West Hartford CT, passed away on April 17, 2016 with her family by her side. Born May 2, 1926 in Harford, CT, Anita was the daughter of the late Lucien W. Strassel and Anita Burke Strassel. She was raised in West Hartford, CT, graduated from Mount St. Joseph Academy, and received a Bachelor’s of Science degree from Middlebury College in 1947. Anita met her husband, Hermann Newell Tiemann III, through a shared love of skiing and they were married in 1955. Nine years later in 1964, they settled in Glastonbury, CT with their four young children. Anita and Newell were avid collectors of early American antique furniture and shared a passion for skiing and the outdoors which they passed on to their children. Anita also loved playing tennis, bird watching, and was known as an engaging conversationalist. She was active in the Middlebury Alumni Association, and supported many organizations dedicated to the conservation of nature and relief of the poor. Anita was predeceased by her husband Newell in 1981, and her daughter Anne Beers Tiemann, of Somerville, MA in 2014. She is survived by her son Peter N. Tiemann and his wife Peggy of New Orleans LA.; her son David Tiemann and wife Renee Freier of Seattle Washington; and her daughter Betsy Semonite and her husband Ned of Carlisle, MA. Anita is also survived by her four grandchildren whom she adored with all her heart: Stuart Semonite, Margot Semonite, Sydney Tiemann, and Blake Tiemann. In accordance with Anita’s wishes, private funeral services were held on April 23, 2016 at St. Paul’s Church in Glastonbury, CT with burial at Green Cemetery there. Anita was very appreciative of the treatment and care she received from the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Mass. during her many years as a patient there.
