I met Tom this past Spring. He was everything the obituary said of him: he loved to learn about new things and new technologies. He wanted to learn everything. And his agile mind allowed him to soak-up information like a sponge.
Tom got his information and learned in a most friendly, conversational manner. One could imagine Tom starting many conversations with the request, "Tell me something I don't know." What followed was always a wonderful exchange of data, stories, and laughter.
So it makes perfect sense he worked for UConn. The guy who sought to know the world around him, and who reveled in the open exchange of information, found himself at the center of academia. How fitting.
To Tom's wife, children, and extended family, I offer my sincere condolences. May the Grace of God permit us to be joined together again someday.

My deepest condolences to all of Tom's family. I worked with Tom the last few years at UConn as our cubicles were across from each other. The fact that I've lived in Chester all my life, where the Chalany family once resided, we had an instant connection. I also spend time on the cape, which gave us an additional connection. He was indeed a very smart man and I learned from him. We shared stories and laughs daily and he was one of many that I missed dearly when I retired a few months ago. I am truly saddened by his passing.
May God Bless You, Tom.

My sincere condolences to the Trahan family. I had the pleasure to have known Tom for many years in the refrigeration industry. Tom was a good friend, co-worker and mentor. I enjoyed talking with Tom if t was about refrigeration, home remodeling or just about working on his garden equipment. He always had a twinkle in his eye with a smile to match and little laugh to follow. Tom was always talking about the family and how proud he was of you, and you should be very proud of Tom, great family man, mentor and friend. Tom will be missed by everyone that he has touched.

Cheryl, Sarah, Erica and family,
I had the fortune of working with Tom at UConn. Whenever he needed a new work order he would come into the Operations Center and ask us for one of our specials with a laugh and a smile. He was a kind and patient man and will be missed amongst our work family. There are no words for your loss . . . I pray that you all find peace through this difficult time and the days and weeks ahead.
So very sorry for your loss,

Tom and I worked together at UConn for many years and I always found him to be genuine and helpful and positive and cheerful. He was always available to give advice whether is was an issue at work or if something broke at my house he would give his two cents as to what it could be and how to fix it. He will truly be missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his entire family at this difficult time.

I am a colleague of Tom's at UConn. We sat in adjacent cubicles the last three years & chatted about grand kids, stupid world stuff, how he would fix anything & life in general. Tom was a kind, gentle teddy bear. While I will miss him, I will not forget him. My thoughts & prayers go out to y'all in this difficult time. Jay
