Obituary of Harold P. Schwerdtfeger

 SCHWERDTFEGER, Harold P. (Buddy, Bud), the loving husband of the late Lorraine T. Schwerdtfeger of Glastonbury, entered into eternal life on January 28, 2021.  Buddy was born in Hartford, CT on March 24, 1927, son of the late Harold and Mary (Donaghue) Schwerdtfeger and spent his childhood years on Franklin Avenue.  His years in the South End were spent playing sports and that is where his lifelong passion for football began.  He graduated early from Bulkeley High School to enlist in the U.S. Navy where he was assigned to Underwater Demolition (UDT) in the Phillipines during World War II.  After his discharge from the Navy, he continued his sports career at Kingswood and then at Trinity College.  Buddy and Lorraine moved to Windsor Locks in 1955 and they moved to Glastonbury in the late 1980’s.  Though his primary career spanned 35 years with The Hartford, he always worked part-time jobs, first at The Sports Center and then at Herb’s Sport Shop in Hartford.  Buddy was an active member of the Windsor Locks sports community, coaching Little League and Midget Football teams and taking an active role on the Windsor Locks Booster Club.  In 2016 he was thrilled to be inducted into the Bulkeley High School Athletic Hall of Fame.  In addition to his wife, Lorraine, and his parents, Buddy was predeceased by his sister, Dorothy Schwerdtfeger.  He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Donna and Harley Higgins of Windsor Locks and Paula and Ron Montenieri of Glastonbury; his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Joanne Schwerdtfeger of Carlsbad, CA; his grandchildren Laurie and Jason Hale of Gilford, NH, Michael and Amber Higgins of South Burlington, VT, Spencer and Kirsten Schwerdtfeger of Buena Park, CA, Conner Schwerdtfeger of Carlsbad, CA, Erin McConaghy of Hatteras, NC, Mark Montenieri of Chattahoochee, FL and his great-grandchildren Cooper and Avery, Caiden, Callen, Cameron and Mackenzie.  Buddy always enjoyed time with his cousins Mary Ellen Slesinski, Bonnie Faraclas, Bill and Joyce Kevetos, Barry and Joanne Donaghue and their families, as well as all the Donaghue cousins.  He thought the world of Lorraine’s family --- nephews Tom, Michael, Jim and John and cousins Doris, Connie, Irene, Patty and Helene and their families.  And even though he was a pretty quiet guy he made friends wherever he went and he maintained many of those friendships for the long haul – his great friends Bill and Linda Lloyd; Smokey and Tony from Bulkeley; Geri and Bob, Carol and Neil, Gil and Monette and June from St. Paul’s; Stan from the Village.  Buddy’s family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to the entire staff at the St. Francis/Trinity Health, The Village at Buckland Court in South Windsor, Touchpoints at Farmington and Seasons Hospice & Palliative Care of Connecticut for the compassionate care and kindness they provided for the entire family.  Due to the current COVID-19 health conditions and restrictions, burial will be private and a celebration of Buddy’s life will take place at a later date.
